C-Net has a built in SMTP server, so it should not be difficult to get it to
recieve email. As it would listen to any incomming connection on port 25 (If
your ISP does not block it.. Most in the US do..)..
For outgoing, you might have to get an email relay account. I should play with
it to see if I can get it to relay through my exchange server. Outgoing would
be a piece of cake. I am not sure how i would do the routing incoming though.
I would like to get NNTP working though.

It is the port 25 that would hinder the outcome. I just set up one of my Pi's to handle email, but I still had to use Google to receive the mail due to port 25 blocked by my ISP.
