From MRO@VERT/BBSESINF to All on Sat Sep 13 11:27:29 2025
So i have datastream bbs which runs on another drive "e:\"

I decided to update today from 3.19c.
i have the sbbsnode and sbbsctrl variables set correctly and i keep
getting it detected as a new bbs install and the wizard ran during the setup and the scfg wizard runs and starts with new settings.

do i need to run update.js or something so i dont get a fresh install overwritten on my current bbs?

yep that was it. maybe you should put that in the installer.

v3.20 uses different configuration files than v3.19: https://wiki.synchro.net/history:newcfgfiles

So yes, you need to run 'jsexec update'.

yep that was it. maybe you should put that in the installer.

The sbbs-win32 installer is not to be used for upgrading - that's stated pretty clearly in the instructions for the installer.

    I don't read instructions.

I expected by now that the installer and upgrade would be one and the same.

Why do you keep them separate? why not make one installation program that
asks if you want to update or do a fresh install?

    Then expect problems.

No, there are separate archives for upgrades (sbup*.zip).

Why do you keep them separate? why not make one installation program that asks if you want to update or do a fresh install?

    It's more work.

maybe you could have a cloud installer where they run the setup, download the correct version they need off of vert and then it runs the upgrade scripts if they are upgrading.

i know you dont like doing releases with an install executable.
maybe it's time to change it into something easier for yourself and
    everyone.

I already make an installer executable for Windows releases. It just doesn't do "upgrades". Upgrading, especially from any arbitrary older version of Synchronet, is a more complex problem that is hard to automate and make fool proof, so I'm just not doing that, at least not with an executable or script. An upgrading sysop needs to read and follow directions.
