• Table of character

From Angel Ripoll@VERT to All on Sun Jun 7 13:28:46 2020
    Hola All!

Can I change the default character table? I see that by default it is in UTF-8 and I want to change it to iso8859-15 if possible. The web and the news server do not let me put accents or the ± caracter (I can't write Espa±a)

    Un saludo,

You should be able to view/enter every character of iso8859-15 in UTF-8. But if you do want to change the default charset (for the web-site), you definitely have options.

I think I have expressed myself wrong.

When I write from synchronet through their web server or nntp, i can put the tildes and others.

If you configure your NNTP client to use UTF-8, all character should be representable.

But here, in Spain, the iso8859-1 (Latin-1) or
iso8859-15 character table that has the character of the euro is used.

UTF-8 includes the euro character as well: https://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/20ac/index.htm

    When
I write from synchronet the other nodes in Spain do not see my accents correctly.

Double-check your NNTP client is configured to use UTF-8. Try posting here (in this message area) a Euro symbol using your NNTP message reader. Similarly, I'll try posting a euro symbol using NNTP or Web and see what I can achieve.

So I would like to put the BBS, at least the web and the nntp
    server, in those character tables.

    Ideally, you would use UTF-8.

But if you do want to change the default charset (for the web-site), you definitely have options.

Could you tell me what the options are?

Look at your web/* files if using the legacy/Runemaster web-UI or webv4/* if using echicken's web interface. Search for "charset", edit to suit your taste. Meanwhile, experiment and I will too.

    Hi Angel !

I use thunderbird to read via nntp, and i have that issue because the
    nntp server send the headers:

    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=IBM437

Thunderbird does not support this encoding, then i see the '?'
characters in the mail read pane.

Also, i set the sbbs.ini MAil->DefaultCharset=IMB850 without results

from news i see the euro symbol, but in my golded i see garbage

    GoldEd doesn't support UTF-8 (?).

No it doesn't. It does support external editors so if you use one that supports UTF-8 you can hit reply to view UTF-8 in that editor. But golded by itself doesn't support UTF-8.

    GoldEd doesn't support UTF-8 (?).

it does and it doesn't... it uses chr tables to convert between character sets so it also relies on the underlying OS character set and font that is loaded... for UTF-8, it is a one way conversion from some character set to UTF-8 but no way to go from UTF-8 to some character set... the chr tables are rooted in DOS and the 256 byte stuff so there is the possibility of loss... and if the font that is loaded doesn't have the proper glyph in the proper slot, yeah...

I think not. At least I have never been able to get it working. They say that using external programs and that their support is limited.

But I want to use the character code we use here, in Spain.

yes. i mean that 437 is not supported

Cool. Then use UTF-8. It's the way of the future (and the present).

Also, i set the sbbs.ini MAil->DefaultCharset=IMB850 without results

That option has no effect on NNTP-imported or posted messages.

SyncTERM doesn't yet support UTF-8, but sbbs will convert to CP437 if it can (and in those example letters, there were CP437 equivalents it could translate to).

Also looks like maybe you need to update your webv4 files from github. Those characters render fine at http://web.synchro.net using the latest ec webv4.

Wild, okay in looking at the source for my own posted message on my
    board, seeing the following.

    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed
    Content-Language: en-GB
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Kind of surprised to see the 7bit tranfer encoding.

NNTP (roughneck) -> QWK (vert) -> HUB (hub.bbs.io)

    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed
    Content-Language: en-GB
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Looks like at least the settings are preserved from NNTP over QWK and
back over NNTP... would still want/need to check other clients and configurations though.

Still not sure about the 7bit encoding, maybe because I didn't use any
high characters... still, utf8 should inherently be 8-bit encoding.

Sounds like a problem with GoldEd... even if you're using an external
editor, if the formatting of the file isn't preserved on save, it could
still be borked... if you use VSCode, you can on the fly change the
encoding, but this will still get destroyed when you upload a reply,
since that encoding likely won't be preserved and will revert to CP437
or whatever the default encoding is.

Yes it is. Golded never had support for UTF-8. It does autodetect that my terminal is UTF-8 capable and inserts a CHRS kludge of "UTF-8 2", that
should say "UTF-8 4" but golded doesn't support it anyway so that has never been fixed.

I'll have to look at the kludge this editor adds although I'm using joe ATM.

Yep, that's still a problem. CP437 is great if you are in North America. I can't even see CP437 with golded. Box drawing characters don't look right.
I've tried to train it to convert between encodings but no luck so far.

that's due to your linux... it is UTF-8 and the font you're using doesn't map the CP437 characters into the proper slots...

one way around this is to run golded via the cp437 tool... you can get it from https://github.com/keaston/cp437 and build it for your system...

that'll make the box and frame characters work but UTF-8 characters won't render...

take a look at that link... the readme offers more info...

Adjusted my QNet accound on vert to preserve/use utf8 with qwke, not
