Ukraine has recaptured 200 square kilometers from Russia in the east (near Sumy). The fighting there is not over yet. For two months, Ukraine kept the conflict quiet in that area, as the Russians were doing the same. Putin believed his soldiers had already advanced more than 30 kilometers further west. Ukraine did nothing to disabuse him of this notion. Last week, Putin proudly pointed out to the Americans how much success they were having. Had the Americans employed serious negotiators, they would have seen right through this. Unfortunately, they did not, and Trump, too, has now adopted Putin's line. Stupidity is now the norm in the US government.
