Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! :-)

There is a British show called "As Time Goes By" where, in one episode, the main male character is trying to have a photo taken in one of those photo booths (either for a passport or a book cover). He is harrassed by a group
of younger people who are apparently from "the continent."

I often picture those kids when the Nodelist Police come up. Well, them

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I was introduced via Netmail to one of those BBQ pests as someone who was highly skilled in programming, engineering, Ham radio, a scientist... really had it shoved down my throat in an introduction how smart the guy was and how he was one to be respected.

Didn't take long to figure out that he's a savant, as in, ZERO personality or social skills. Surprised he was even married, to a human female no less. In every interaction he must be right and shove something down your throat, right down to cherrypicking quote-wars.. usually over something stupid.

Surprisingly he has me in his twit filter and went crying to ZC2 a few times because I hurt his feelings. This is someone much older and likely more educated than I am yet self-implodes when faced with a giant middle finger.

Yeah, I haven't had any netmails that I remember, but I get the same impression in the echomail traffic. Arrogant, self-righteous, superiority-complex, condescending attitudes towards all "lesser" folk. Especially those who don't give a rat's ass about the "IPv4 crisis" and

That is another show I watched. Yes. Her passing was recent, 3 October. She played Hyacinth Bucket. "The 'Bouquet' residence. The lady of the house speaking." And poor Richard! Believe it or not, my dad indroduced me to these shows a few decades ago. He still quotes them.

    This one?

    Waiting for God (BBC, 1990-1994)

    Setting: Bayview Retirement Home.

Premise: Two spirited elderly residents - Tom (Graham Crowden)
and Diana (Stephanie Cole) - rebel against the patronizing
management and refuse to "grow old gracefully."

Tone: Sharp, witty, and a bit dark; a satire on aging and bureaucracy.

Why it fits: Entirely set in a seniors' residence, with lots of
ensemble interaction among the elderly residents and staff.

Fortunately, my parents are still able to take care of themselves in their own home, in their 80's. However, my in-laws, not so much. My father-in-law is in a nursing home and my wife takes her mother to visit him twice a week. Her brother takes her on Saturday and does other errands for her, including stopping by during the week on his lunch break to make her lunch.

Harvey was tight, and you did feel for her. IIRC, her name was Jane, and
the two main elderly characters were working to get the two together romantically.

Yes, we were getting those shows on a PBS type station as well.
Usually every year they rebroadcast a couple of new and older shows
from the BBS, but without subscribing to BritBox or something you
won't see them anywhere else. At the moment there's not much on
there but I hope that's just a brief situation..

I'm just glad the Fall TV season has now started up again. I have
to watch a lot of older shows during the summer when all the main
shows are off the air or in repeats if I don't save some up to
watch later when there's lots on.

I lost a huge collection of saved shows when the recorder on my
Satellite TV system fried a few weeks back, so I've been watching
a lot of mostly older movies. I actually rarely watch movies unless
they are well known ones I've been hoping to see. I always find
when I'm watching pretty much any movie they put on TV that I'm
amazed at how many of them are really pretty bad, even ones with
    well known actors in them.

My TV service recently gave us 4 feeds of the Starz network at
no extra cost. They show mostly older movies, but the bigger
ones that were at the theaters. Since I don't get out to see
movies, I'm finding a lot there that are, if not new, are new
to me and on average better than the made for TV variety.

BTW.. If it sounds like I Live for TV, I actually only watch
TV for about 3 hours in the evening, other than catching the
news when having lunch. I spend a lot more hours reading than
    watching TV.

Since it is the original to me, I didn't have that stigma, but I can see

I have never watched that one, but have followed other stories where all
the original main characters are gone. The classic TV Show "The Naked
City" was like that. Most of the original cops -- the two main characters
in particular -- were either gone or relegated to supporting roles about
midway through the 4 or 5 year run of the show. IIRC, "Arcaro" was the
only regular character that was on the whole run of the show.

The Dukes of Hazzard also did that for one season before the original Duke
Boys returned. I was reminded of that this weekend... I was at the annual festival in my father's hometown and two of the guests of honor were "Coy
Duke" and "Bo Duke"... Bo being one of the originals, and Coy being his temporary replacement. ;)

As you've watched both, how true to the original series is the current one?

On our PBS affiliate network, they ran a show during their fundraisers that touched on some differences between the current series vs. the book, but I
was curious about the original series. For some reason, I got the
impression it might have been more of a comedy than the current one.

Replying to a message of Mike Powell to ROB MCCART:

On our PBS affiliate network, they ran a show during their fundraisers that touched on some differences between the current series vs. the
book, but I was curious about the original series. For some reason,
I got the impression it might have been more of a comedy than the
    current one.

The original has a few minor comedic elements but was most definitely a drama. It was directly based off of the book and from what I can recall, it didn't differ too much from the book but I don't fully trust my memory anymore.

Correct. Coy wasn't a direct replacement, but was the blond-headed cousin

watch later when there's lots on.

That's the same with us. We record our favorite shows to watch during dinner. Some of these same ones are available on various streaming services, but we usually watch them on the DVR. We subscribe to vary many as the Satellite service costs us enough. Why pay for duplication? During the baseball season, from Spring Training to the World Series, if my team is playing, I usually eat my dinner in the hamshack if the game is on.

I lost a huge collection of saved shows when the recorder on my
Satellite TV system fried a few weeks back, so I've been watching

We've had that happen before. We actually have two DVRs. We have one that has two receivers and then we have another that has 4 or 6, I cannot remember. What's nice is that they are connected together and we can watch recorded shows on either DVR on any TV. (We have 4, so two apiece...)

a lot of mostly older movies. I actually rarely watch movies unless
they are well known ones I've been hoping to see. I always find
when I'm watching pretty much any movie they put on TV that I'm
amazed at how many of them are really pretty bad, even ones with
    well known actors in them.

I like a lot of old movies, the black and white ones. Lately, I have been watching some "classic" sci-fi movies on YouTube.

We get that, too. I find there aren't enough movies we like to warrant paying for yet another channel or package.

BTW.. If it sounds like I Live for TV, I actually only watch
TV for about 3 hours in the evening, other than catching the
news when having lunch. I spend a lot more hours reading than
    watching TV.

Usually, if the TV is on, it's baseball. I follow a few channels on YouTube, but most often I'm reading BBS messages, both FTN and amateur radio packet BBS messages, or working on one of those same BBS systems.

Yes, I watched the original All Creatures back when it was current,
    >> or at least current rebroadcast in Canada. When the new version came
    >> out I first wasn't that impressed but it grew on me over time.

I don't know if the original ever ran here on our PBS network, at least not
    >since the 1990s when I started watching the "non-US" shows.

Probably the original series was less complex than the new shows
but you do get used to the characters..

Sort of like Heartbeat. It is still pretty good but the two main
    >> characters that it started with are long gone. If I recall, in
    >> one episode they said that they had moved to Canada.. B)

Yes, another thing they do is create a spin-off show and flip a
couple of characters over to the new show and then shut down
the original. Like this month they brought out a new show called
Boston Blue, which it turned out is a spinoff of BlueBloods which
I don't think is coming back.. But they bought one of the main
detectives to Boston after his son was injured there and had him
help them with the case, and now they are talking him into moving
there, and he shows up as a main charcter, not a visiting one.

There wasn't anything wrong with it, I was just used to the old
    >> show's characters and you can be slow to accept a remake.

As you've watched both, how true to the original series is the current one?

As mentioned elsewhere, possibly the new show is a little more complex
and more blood graphic at times, but most of those shows are more about
the relationships between charaters than what they are doing..

On our PBS affiliate network, they ran a show during their fundraisers that
    >touched on some differences between the current series vs. the book, but I

I think the original did have a little more comedy in it. It's a
while since I saw it but my recall is that Tristan was a lot more
of a goofball on the old show. The original James Harriot struck
me as slightly more 'likeable' and, although his current wife is
not too bad, I liked the original lady a little more.

One popular Canadian show is Murdoch Mysteries. Maybe you've run
across it as it's apparently very popular in the USA. It is an old
time Police show set in Toronto around 1924. It's pretty good most
of the time, if a little unrealistic about some things. Semi-comedy.

But, I found books by the original author that the TV series was
based on, and there were major differences between the some of
the characters in the books compared to on the TV show..
    (Especially George Crabtree)

Yes, he sure did. Some of his habits/mannerisms were there, but I guess the many years that would have passed between the two changed him a lot. Being set so far in the past I'm not sure catching newer shows or older
ones matter all that much other than the relationships between some of
the characters that changed over the years. The idea of it didn't strike
me as being that great but once I got into it I've kept up to date with
the shows that have now been running for 19 years. It must be popular to

I think you mean Frankie Drake Mysteries. (2017 to 2021)
That is set a slightly later than Murdoch but still in the late 1920's.
Lauren Lee Smith is Frankie Drake and she IS quite easy on the eyes. B)

She was in another series called The Listener where she played a modern
police detective, but in that one she had very short platinum blonde

Yes, Morse was on for a few years before they brought out Endeavour.

Endeavour ran for 9 seasons starting in 2012 and Morse ran for 8 seasons starting in 1987 but they only made 3 or 4 episodes a year, not like most series do these days..

Last of the Summer Wine was called the "longest-running British Comedy"
when it was still being filmed. It started as a one-off episode of another show, in the early 1970s. That pilot did well so they made a series out of
it. It ran until sometime in the 2010's. One of my all time favorites. ;)

IIRC, the show it spun-off of was the same one that spun-off Are You Being Served.

I have also seen anything and everything Star Trek multiple times. One franchise I have never watched is Star Wars. I was in my early teens when Star Wars first came out.

Usually, if the TV is on, it's baseball.

Ironically, I get a huge number of Sports channels in my basic
package and I set it up so they don't even display on the guide.
I never got into watching sports other than the odd time during
the Olympic Games. I played a lot of sports in my youth but I
never got into watching others playing them..

As far as Major League Baseball's blackout rules, I can watch the Dodgers, Angels and the A's, but not the Giants. I never watched much pro football and not one game since 2020 when players began kneeling during the National Anthem. I occasionally watch the Fresno State Bulldogs, but even that has fallen off over the years.

This has tended to please women friends no-end over the years.. B)

My wife would probably like it better if I didn't like sports, but there are other interests that tend to take some time as well. If my team isn't on, I make it a point to spend mealtime with her.

I think I saw a few episodes of that quite a while back, the name rings

This is the year for unexpected spin-offs though..

I mentioned they shut down Blue Bloods, a cop show that takes place
in New York, but they moved 2 of the characters to Boston in a new
    show called Boston Blue.

Another new show here is called Sheriff Country, a modern day police
show set in a small town, but it didn't take long to realize that
it is a spin-off of Fire Country, a show about fire fighters doing
mostly forest fire work with a number of the men being convicts
working off the last of their sentences that's been on for 4 years..
Supposedly set in a fictional town (Edgewater) in Northern California,
but is mostly filmed in Vancouver Canada.

I don't have a major enough Data plan to stream TV shows so I have the 'Basic' full package from Rogers Digital Satellite.

I've had offers from Bell to upgrade to a 5G system at a great

I use the web site Fast.com to test speed. They usually do a 60 or
70 meg download to test that speed and there's a second option for
More Info that repeats that for 10 meg or so to check Upload speed.

And wow.. I just ran that on my Laptop to verify the address and
    This time I got 24mbps / 8.4mbps

Actually I found some old tests and found I've hit 23 / 7.7 mbps
    in the past too.

I'm not super close to the tower that my phone uses here, which was
verified by a Bell repairman. I assumed I was using a closer but
smaller recently installed tower but he tested it and said it's
using a different tower that's probably about 7 or 8 miles away
as the crow flies. (A longer drive..)

Father Brown runs regularly here, and I enjoy it. It has been in re-runs for a while, though. We don't get Sister Boniface, but I have seen her guest-start on Father Brown a time or two.

Sherlock was a favorite but is likely not coming back anytime soon... I think the lead actors have moved on to bigger and better things.

Have watched Miss Scarlet. Here, we have seen two different versions of Professor T. The original Belgian version (with subtitles), which I prefer, and the British version, which is also good and, so far, has not 100% mirrored the Belgian version.

The Belgian version has not run OTA in a while, but was available on PBS Passport last I checked. The British version just finished a season.

I have a friend who lives closer to downtown and he has AT&T fibre and, if memory serves, his speeds are over 300 mbps. Fibre isn't to our neighborhood yet. It was built in late 1958 through 196?. Ours was built in 1960, a few years before I was born.

The truck shop where I work is about 4 1/2 miles north of town and about one mile too far out for cable internet and AT&T doesn't serve that area, except for land line phone. The company sold on April 1 of this year and the new owner had the wireless internet provider (using 5 ghz links) disconnected after Starlink was installed. So far, so good. ~350/25 (We use 5 ghz links to our repeater site 37 miles away @ 7,500')

AFAIK The Office and All in the Family were American English versions of originally British English shows. The Office (UK) has been the basis of several other English and non-English variants, though.

Sanford and Son was based on a British show, Steptoe and Son. I need to
    see the original sometime.

There was a show in one of the Scandanavian countries... I think it was
named after the link between them and mainland Europe... that was later
remade into a British/French show called, IIRC, The Tunnel, which links the
UK and France. It made me curious about the original.

I have a friend who lives closer to downtown and he has AT&T fibre and, if me

There are not many options where I am. The Bell Boxes are so old you
can forget Fibre, they were only able to handle Dial Up at half speed
    when I first moved here.

In recent years we at least now have the option of Cell Phone Data plans
and Satellite service at very high prices.

My next door neighbours are only here for 3 or 4 weeks a year but they
need decent Internet speeds for business purposes while here so they
installed Starlink this past year and are paying about $1800 a year
for service over those few weeks..

employed for the past 39 years so I haven't had to worry about
pleasing anyone but myself as long as I was successful enough to pay
    the bills..

Next March, I will have my commercial driver license (CDL) for 40 years. I ha

Pretty neat. That reminds me of the song "I've been everywhere man.." B)

I always expected when younger that I'd stay with whatever company I
got hired by for my whole working life but something always seemed to
come up to mess that up. Usually I stayed for 5 or 6 years.

When I unexpectedly (unplanned?) quit my last regular job it was
supposed to originally be for just 6 months, and then I extended
that to 2 years but, in the end, I never did go back.

I made some money from investments and worked part time at various
things like Computer programming and repair in the early years and
later property management and maintenance to add a bit to my income
but it was a rare year I actually worked for pay for more than the
equivalent of 2 or 3 weeks a year.

My property is pretty big with a lot of old buildings so there was
always a lot to keep me busy..

i.e.. We have shingled 7 roofs on the buildings here.

Starlink is now offering "no upfront equipment costs" for their

I would never value internet at so highly as to pay that much.
