I discovered that The Semware Editor, successor to QEdit, is now
freeware for Windows and Linux. It's a really powerful
text-based editor. It's available at semware.com.
I use it as my Windows box's text editor and with Multimail.

On Linux/Bsd/Solaris etc I always preferred Vi...
