I could never understand why \Windows\NTDS is "unprotected" or not hidden, because one missing log sends everything into a freakin' tailspin.

    Classic microsoft.
Speaking of backups, I should probably go make another tarchive of my system.

Me too. I need to set up an AWS S3 Glacier instance for the BBS. I use the excellent "s3cmd" program to interact from the command line for backing up
    the BBS.

Another terrific program is Duplicati which is free, open source, and can
back up to 20+ online cloud services as well as traditional services like FTP/SFTP and NFS (I think; I'd have to check again on NFS).

Also, if you want to set up a file server, I recommend XigmaNAS. Based on FreeBSD and uses ZFS for its filesystem.

Yeah, but backwards compatibility (which to be fair is pretty good) ties their hands.

Looking back now I wished in the 90's that Windows NT was pushed over Windows 95 and especially 98. NT wasn't perfect but was farrrrrrrr superior to 95/98.

MS should of left things totally alone with 3.1, never got involved with IBM OS/2 and instead just told the world that NT is the future Windows... yes people would of been upset to adopt with having to buy better hardware to run NT but it would of been an effective cut-off from 3.1-design to NT-design.

With 95/98 ending up being more popular than NT, that stupid flawed 3.1-era cooperative-tasking single-user mentality influenced a lot of authors to write software in a halfassed way. Then we all saw MS chasing its tail trying to
fix later on in the 2000's what NT was able to do from the beginning.... ie. reliable OS kernel, seperate profiles, user/directory permissions etc etc.

I'm talking of things like using a microkernel instead of a macrokernel, being able to update the OS without rebooting, support for more file systems, the ability to move the install to another computer (creating a generic setup instead of a device-specific setup), and things like that.

    Whats a microkernel?

A microkernel is a kernel that is the heart of an operating system but it has the bare essentials and all other functionality is outside of the kernel meaning that you can have a small, fast setup if you with to configure it since Linux loads its drivers into RAM, unlike Windows which embeds its drivers into the kernel itself. This also allows one to have a very precisely configured system with no additional bloat that can be used on many different computers unlike Windows.
