Fires in Manitoba

The Canadian province of Manitoba was shrouded under heavy smoke as thirty active fires spewed the sooty stuff into the atmosphere in early July 2021. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the gray scene on July 7. The smoke is so thick that almost all of Lake Winnipeg is obscured from view. Lake Winnipeg is roughly 271 miles long (436 km) with an area of 9,170 square miles (23,750 sq. km). Lake Winnipegosis can be seen to the east of the cloud of smoke.

According to the July 7 Fire Situation Report published by the Manitoba government, nineteen of these fires were receiving Full Response, while 11 were Modified Response. Two fires were listed as “out of control” and 13 were considered to be under control. These fires add to an already vicious fire season for the province, which has already had more than 786,000 acres (318,000 hectares) burned in 145 fires. Wildfires have scorched many areas in western Canada this year, with Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia all struggling with substantial number of blazes after a hot, dry winter and spring. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported on July 6 that 3,200 wildfires had burned more than 1.5 million acres in the country this year. On that date, there were 142 out-of-control wildfires, with the largest concentration in British Columbia.

On July 7, the Manitoba government issued fire and travel restrictions over much of Manitoba, citing drought conditions in southern and central Manitoba and a return to extreme fire danger levels. In areas under restriction, all provincial burning permits have been cancelled. Travel restrictions are at “Level 2”, which includes prohibition of motorized backcountry travel, including ATVs and other off-road vehicles. In addition, these areas will restrict camping to developed campgrounds; restrict campfires to between the hours 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.; and boats must launch and land at developed shorelines only.
