Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 June 10 [2]A starfield is shown with a large colorful emission nebula in the center. The outline of this emission nebula has a resemblance to a lion. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. This powerful feline appearing [7]nebula is powered by two [8]massive stars, each with a mass over 20 times greater than [9]our Sun. Formed from [10]shells of ionized gas that have expanded, the nebula's energetic matter not only [11]glows, but is dense enough to contract [12]gravitationally and form stars. The angular size of the [13]Lion Nebula, officially named [14]Sh2-132, is slightly greater than that of the [15]full moon. The gaseous [16]iconic region resides about 10,000 [17]light years away in a [18]constellation named after the King of [19]Aethopia in [20]Greek mythology.
