Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 August 26 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/CwrvN0Q9_Sg?rel=0 Perseid Meteors Over Inner Mongolia Video Credit: [3]Jeff Dai ([4]TWAN); Music: [5]Ibaotu catalog number 771024 (Used with permission) Explanation: Did you see it? One of the more common questions during a [6]meteor shower occurs because the time it takes for a meteor to flash is similar to the time it takes for a head to turn. Possibly, though, the glory of seeing [7]bright meteors shoot across the sky -- while knowing that they were once small [8]pebbles on [9]another world -- might make it all worthwhile, even if your observing partner(s) can't always share in your experience. The [10]featured video is composed of short clips taken in [11]Inner Mongolia, [12]China during the 2023 [13]Perseid Meteor Shower. Several bright meteors were captured while [14]live-reaction audio was being recorded -- just as the [15]meteors flashed. This year's [16]2024 Perseids also produced [17]many beautiful meteors. Another [18]good meteor shower to watch for is the [19]Geminids which peak yearly in mid-December, this year with relatively little competing glow from a nearly new Moon.
