Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 September 11 [2]A starry sky is shown with the busy central band of our Milky Way Galaxy showing diagonally from the upper left. Mountains are on the horizon, with trees and a stream running up from the foreground. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. A Night Sky over the Tatra Mountains Image Credit: [3]Marcin RosadziƄski; Text: [4]Natalia Lewandowska ([5]SUNY Oswego) Explanation: A natural border between [6]Slovakia and [7]Poland is the [8]Tatra Mountains. A prominent destination for astrophotographers, the Tatras are the highest mountain range in the [9]Carpathians. In the [10]featured image taken in May, one can see the center of our [11]Milky Way [12]galaxy with two of its famous [13]stellar nurseries, the [14]Lagoon and [15]Omega Nebula, just over the top of the Tatras. Stellar nurseries are full of [16]ionized hydrogen, a [17]fundamental component for the formation of [18]Earth-abundant water. As a [19]fundamental ingredient in all known [20]forms of life, water is a [21]crucial element in the [22]Universe. Such [23]water can be seen in the foreground in the form of the [24]Bialka River.
