Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 October 2 [2]An unusual looking galaxy is shown with a light bar running nearly vertical and blue stars and red nebulas around the edges. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. The Large Magellanic Cloud Galaxy Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Ireneusz Nowak; Text: [4]Natalia Lewandowska ([5]SUNY Oswego) Explanation: It is the largest satellite galaxy of our home Milky Way Galaxy. If you live in the south, the [6]Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is [7]quite noticeable, spanning about 10 degrees across the night sky, which is 20 times larger than the [8]full moon towards the southern constellation of the [9]dolphinfish ([10]Dorado). Being only about 160,000 [11]light years away, many details of the LMC's structure can be seen, such as its [12]central bar and its single spiral arm. The LMC harbors numerous stellar nurseries where new stars are being born, which appear in pink in the [13]featured image. It is home to the [14]Tarantula Nebula, the currently most active star forming region in the entire [15]Local Group, a small collection of nearby galaxies dominated by the massive [16]Andromeda and [17]Milky Way galaxies. Studies of the LMC and the [18]Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by [19]Henrietta Swan Leavitt led to the discovery of the period-luminosity relationship of [20]Cepheid variable stars that are used to [21]measure distances across the nearby [22]universe.
