Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 October 13 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/uCbpHh_rTgc?rel=0 Aurora Timelapse Over Italian Alps Video Credit & Copyright: [3]Cristian Bigontina Explanation: Did you see last night's aurora? This question was relevant around much of the world a few days ago because a powerful auroral storm became [4]visible unusually far from the Earth's poles. The cause was a giant [5]X-class solar flare on Tuesday that launched energetic [6]electrons and protons into the [7]Solar System, connecting to the Earth via our planet's [8]magnetic field. A [9]red glow of these particles striking [10]oxygen atoms high in [11]Earth's atmosphere pervades the frame, while [12]vertical streaks dance. The [13]featured video shows a one-hour timelapse as seen from [14]Cortina d'Ampezzo over [15]Alps Mountain [16]peaks in northern [17]Italy. Stars from our [18]Milky Way Galaxy dot the background while streaks from airplanes and satellites punctuate the foreground. The [19]high recent activity of [20]our Sun is likely to continue to produce [21]picturesque auroras over Earth during the next year or so.
