Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 November 26 [2]The top panel shows a flat ring with a bright center in blue, even though it was taken in near infrared light. The bottom panel shows the same galaxy in visible light and shows a brighter and more expansive center against which the flat ring appears dark. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. The Sombrero Galaxy from Webb and Hubble Image Credit: [3]NASA, [4]ESA, [5]CSA, [6]STScI, [7]Hubble Heritage Project ([8]STScI, [9]AURA) Explanation: This floating ring is the size of a galaxy. In fact, it is a galaxy -- or at least part of one: the photogenic [10]Sombrero Galaxy is one of the largest galaxies in the nearby [11]Virgo Cluster of Galaxies. The dark band of [12]dust that obscures the mid-section of the [13]Sombrero Galaxy in visible light (bottom panel) actually [14]glows brightly in infrared light (top panel). The [15]featured image shows the [16]infrared glow in false blue, recorded recently by the space-based [17]James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and released yesterday, pictured above an [18]archival image taken by NASA's [19]Hubble Space Telescope in [20]visible light. The [21]Sombrero Galaxy, also known as [22]M104, spans about 50,000 [23]light years and lies 28 million light years away. [24]M104 can be seen with a small telescope in the direction of the constellation [25]Virgo.
