  • Strange coloured sammich

    Hi All,

    Dave's recent batch of sammaches triggered a memory of going to
    functions with my aunt who would make this weird multi coloured
    layered sammich.

    Anyone have a guess on what it was? I /think/ one layer was salman
    but I can't be sure.

    Lotta help on this one aren't I? - Anyone have an idea?

    There are different kinds. Some people put multiple layers of various
    spreads between layers of thin sliced bread. There are other what I
    would call tiny sammaches where they take a roll of "bread," smear
    something on it, then roll it up and cut it into round pieces. Those,
    IIRC, usually only have one layer of filling, though.

    The green layer, if there was one, may have been made from watercress or cucumber. IIRC, my mom used to like making a salad or spread out of
    cucumber. If they were being made locally, one layer might be pimento
    cheese.

    I am guessing the contents of the layers would be up to the preferences
    of the preparer, so a salmon spread would also be a candidate.

    Salmon and pimento cheese? I've seen that before.

    Title: Alaska Salmon Salad Sandwich
    Categories: Fish, Sandwich
    Yield: 6 Sandwiches

    15 1/2 oz Canned Alaska salmon
    1/3 c Plain nonfat yogurt
    1/3 c Chopped green onions
    1/3 c Chopped celery
    1 tb Lemon juice
    Black pepper; to taste
    12 sl Bread

    Drain and flake salmon. Stir in remaining ingredients except pepper
    and bread. Season with pepper to taste. Spread salmon mixture on half
    of bread slices; top with remaining bread. Cut sandwiches into halves
    or quarters.

    Makes 6 sandwiches.

    Nutrients Per Serving:

    Calories: 264
    Sodium: 713 mg
    Protein: 20.1 g
    Dietary Fiber: 1.48 g
    Carbohydrates: 29.6 g
    Fat-Total: 6.68 g

    I have only seen and eaten them. I am hoping that someone with experience preparing them, or at least paying better attention to what they are
    eating, will pipe up with more details. ;)

    Might be cream cheese. Were the layers all different?

    If it wasn't too big for the mouth or slippery/sloppy then apt to be various thin meat cuts with thin condiment layers.

    How many layers do you seem to recall?

    Yes they were all different.

    It wasn't too big, and stayed together well.

    How many layers do you seem to recall?

    I'm going to say 3... and I remember the bread being very thin.
