Ok, does anyone have any idea (Rick, my hub does not) why the only
time I get messages into my node is when I send a messsage out?
They'll come in for a day or two, then stop entirely. As soon as the
hub gets a message from me during this hiatus, the messages will flood
it. I can poll the hub and get nothing. As soon as I send a message (usually to the test echo), they start coming in for a short period of time. Any ideas why this would be so?

Rick's system was misconfigured on my end for mail. I just fixed it
today. Give things a few days and maybe this was the cause of your issues.
Thanks, Sean! It appears to have been the issue and I'm getting
messages now.
